ABOUT
Everything starts with the frontman Franco Onnis, who at the young age of 16 begins playing live at some small parties in Southern Sardinia, home of Rod Sacred - when in '82, in the midst of the Heavy Metal revolution, he founds Rod Sacred. The band mainly plays covers of Saxon, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, and Def Leppard, while gaining recognition throughout Sardinia as an excellent live band.

In '85, RS records their first Demo Tape titled "Speel Of Steel." The demo attracts the interest of the national press and encourages Franco to make a professional demo.
In '88, the first real Rod Sacred workpiece is released, simply titled '1988,' containing four tracks recorded in the studio with Franco Onnis producing. Franco Onnis on bass, Martino Vargiu and Paolo Bonilli on guitars, Antonio Deriu on vocals, and Joe Del Rio on drums make up Rod Sacred. In the same year, a significant contract is secured with Musical Box Promotion, which handles the band's promotion with radio, newspapers, and record labels.
The work of RS is well-see by the national press, marking the beginning of a new era of concerts with original music, articles in music magazines, and an increasingly loyal fan base. During this year, the band faces a setback with the loss of one of the two guitarists in a car accident. However, they respond forcefully to the despair by embarking on their first Italian tour with only one guitarist. The tour touches numerous cities and reaches its peak in Milan in a legendary concert organised by Pino Scotto from the band Vanadium.

In '89, Musical Box invests in RS's first album, recorded at Much More Studios in Florence. During the recording, Franco and the Rod's manager lead to. Discomagic in Milan with just a few tracks from the album but manage to sign the first record deal.
The album is released in January '90 and is an immediate success, followed by a second promotional tour.
The major German magazine Metal Hammer writes, "the best emerging band in Europe in 1990." Dozens of Italian and foreign radio stations and newspapers request interviews and features, while the tour continues with dozens of dates.
In '92, RS signs a contract with the label SUPPORTO ITALIANO and records a promo with new songs and a slightly more aggressive style. The promo is well-received by critics, and in 1996, they record the new album "Sucker of Soul’s."
RS takes a break for a few years, but driven by excellent reviews of their latest album, they organise a long Italian tour in '97 culminating in a legendary concert in Cagliari (their hometown) with over 3000 people, covered by radio and TV.

The relationship with the new record label becomes tense, and the band refuses the requirement of moving permanently in London, causing the end of the Rod Sacred.
Meanwhile, Franco, the group's frontman, continues to make music and in 2005, he co-founds the Rolling Gangsters with Joe Perrino (well-known figure in Underground music), recording two albums and playing numerous concerts across Europe.

In 2013, driven by nostalgia, Franco reforms Rod Sacred with Franco Onnis on bass, Joe Del Rio on drums, Jimmy Carboni and Martino Vargiu on guitars, and Alessandro Marras on vocals. The new project includes the imminent release of a new album and a tour in support of the new release.
Upon request, RS immediately records a cover of 'Kiss of Death,' a song by the historic Italian band Strana Officina, which will be published in the double CD tribute dedicated to the band.
In 2014, Rod Sacred plays, with great critical acclaim, in an edition of Rock’N’Bol, a metal music festival held in Sardinia, featuring Arch Enemy as headliners.
The 2015 begins with a great concert in Modena for Acciaio Italiano Fest, receiving myriad positive reviews from fans and present journalistic critics. In the same year, the band signs a new record deal with a coveted German label, Pure Steel Record.
In January 2016, Rod enters the Metropolitan Studios to record the new album "SUBMISSION," an emotionally impactful album with a strong sound. The Submission Tour lasts for 4 months with various dates across Italy.

In 2017, a long European tour takes place in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Italy.

In 2018, RS performs again in Foggia alongside the legendary Doogie White (Rainbow, Malmsteen, M. Shenker) and in London for the MetalWorks event.

2019 includes several concerts in Sardinia and a few in Italy.

In 2020, a long tour of 18 dates in Italy was planned, but the global SARS COVID pandemic intervenes, forcing the band to withdraw from the scene for the entire year.
At the end of 2021, the entertainment world begins to unlock, and Rod Sacred participates as headliners in the prestigious Sardinian festival Rock’n’Bol.

In 2023, after a few silent years, RS releases a new album titled 'Another Day' for the label METAL ZONE ITALIA, followed by a promotional tour. The band's lineup at this point consists of Franco Onnis on bass, Antonio Deriu on vocals, Jimmy Carboni on guitar, and Ricky Sedda on drums.

Nati nel 1982 a Villasor (SU) da un’idea di Franco Onnis, sono da
considerarsi il primo gruppo heavy metal sardo. Il primo anno il gruppo si
dedica a realizzare cover di gruppi internazionali facendosi apprezzare a
livello live, nel 1983 iniziano a scrivere i primi brani originali che
vedranno la luce soltanto nel 1985 con il demo “Speel of Steel” con il quale
catturano l’attenzione della stampa internazionale e ciò spinge i Rod
Sacred a stampare un demo professionale che uscirà tre anni dopo con il
titolo “1988”.
Ciò, oltre ai vari apprezzamenti dalla stampa e dagli addetti ai lavori e ai
numerosi concerti, porta anche al primo contratto. Ma al momento di
stampare il loro primo full length il gruppo subisce una disgrazia, la morte
improvvisa di uno dei due chitarristi della band. Ma i Rod Sacred non si
perdono d’animo e dopo il loro primo tour italiano nel 1990 esce il loro
primo full length “Rod Sacred”.
Nel 1991 sono eletti da “Metal Shock” come secondo migliore gruppo
emergente, ma nel 1992 iniziano un po' di problemi all’interno del gruppo
che portano allo scioglimento momentaneo dei Rod Sacred fino ai primi
del 1996, quando Franco con in mano un nuovo contratto e una nuova
formazione rimette in piedi il gruppo, registra un nuovo demo “Dark
Confusion”.
Nel 1997, dopo l’uscita del nuovo full length “Sucker of Souls”, Franco
organizza da solo un lungo Tour Italiano che culmina con un mitico
concerto al Teatro Tenda della Fiera di Cagliari con oltre 3000 persone e
ripreso da Radio e TV.
A causa dei rapporti tesi con la casa discografica che vorrebbe trasferire in
maniera definitiva il gruppo in inghilterra, Franco chiude
“definitivamente” i Rod Sacred.
Ma la nostalgia è tanta, nonostante Franco Onnis sia impegnato in
numerosi progetti nel 2013 si riformano i Rod Sacred. Nel 2014
partecipano con il brano “Kiss of Death” al CD tributo alla Strana Officina e
ad una fantastica edizione del “Rock’N’Bol” che vede gli Arch Enemy come
headliners.
Nel 2016 esce il loro terzo full length “Submission” e nel giugno dello
stesso anno inizia il “Submission Tour” che durerà fino alla fine del 2016.
Gli anni successivi proseguono come era terminato il 2016 con numerosi
concerti e tour che arrivano a toccare la repubblica Ceca e la Slovacchia.
Nel 2019 arriva un altro stop per il gruppo dovuto alla pandemia
mondiale, fino al 2021 i Rod Sacred saranno impegnati a scrivere nuovi
brani.
Anno 2023, nuovo contratto discografico con l’italianissima etichetta
discografica “Metal Zone Italia” e uscita del quarto full length “Another
Day”, lo stesso anno troviamo Franco Onnis ad organizzare un festival che
in un paio di anni è diventato un punto di riferimento per tutti i rockers
sardi e non solo, il “Sorres in Rock”, arrivato nel 2025 alla terza edizione e
che vede sul palco gruppi italiani e internazionali.
Nel 2025 esce sempre per la “Metal Zone Italia” un cofanetto celebrativo
dei Rod Sacred “40 anni on the road” che raccoglie tutto il materiale
pubblicato negli anni dal gruppo e numerosa memorabilia e non finisce
qui… in uscita il disco live, che sarà presentato al Sorres in Rock il 12
luglio e il nuovo full length nel 2026.
I Rod Sacred sono da considerare a tutti gli effetti, a parte il fatto di essere
il gruppo sardo più longevo ancora in attività, un’eccellenza del Metal
Italiano e ormai riconosciuti in Europa come Italian Cult Metal Band.
